| Favourite Locos | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| This month we have decided to feature our favourite locos. Members of the Reeve's Team have selected locos which are of particular interest to themselves and given a brief introduction into why they feel these models offer something over the hundreds of alternatives available at Reeves | |||||||||||||||||||||||

Black 5 (5", 4-6-0 Tender Locomotive) Examples of this model are frequently seen at rallies and exhibitions, so help at building this model is widely available from fellow engineers. Reeves 2000 are also able to offer a construction manual, written by the designer Don Youn, to aide prospective builders of this model. Many of the castings for this model are available in either gun metal or iron. These include the cylinder casting set, main axleboxes, piston blanks and tender axleboxes. The full set of drawings comprise of 13 sheets which were accurately draughted from the original works drawings. If the scale of the Black 5 is not to your liking, or maybe you track, then alternatives include Dot (1"), Doris (3 1/2") or even Highlander (7 1/4") |

Henley (3 1/2", 0-4-0 Tank Locomotive) Henley is widely considered to be an ideal beginners model. The drawings comprise of 20 sheets which are clear and concise. The castings for this model are readily available as are boiler kits, flanged plates and finished boilers. All castings for this model are in gun metal which makes them easier to machine than iron, which is of particular benefit to the less experienced engineer. The Henley was designed by Andrew Smith and features outside Walshaerts Valve Gear and Slide Valve Cylinders |

Didcot (5", 0-4-2 Tank Locomotive) 'Pure Great Western' The model designed by Neville Evans is based on the 14xx Tank Locmotives used by the Great Western Railway. The driving wheel diameter of 5 1/2" means that the model is a very free running engine. Currently we can offer the cylinder casting set in either cast iron or gun metal. The engine is popular with a engineers as there are a number of these 14xx locmotives in preservation whic gives the engineer an opportunity to see the prototype in action. A larger alternative to the Didcot is the Dart (7 1/4"). This engine
designed by Martin Evans, is a compact but very useful locomtive for ground
level running. The driving wheel has a diameter of 7 7/8". The locomotive,
with an overall length of 49" does mean it is one of the easier 7
1/4" locomtives to move around. This engine was described in the
Model Engineer magazine, vols 147-149 inclusive |

Castings for this model are usually available 'off the shelf'. Castings are comprised of both cast iron and gun metal. The drawings for this model comprise of 10 sheets and are supported by a construction series in Model Engineer, vols. 143-144 |
